WEATHER CONDITIONS

Season phenology:

Weather conditions:

Air temperature ranged from +1-6°C on Victoria Island on 14-17 July with dull weather, fogs, drizzle and wet snow. At least 2 strong storms at northern wind occurred on the island in the first half of July, judging by the abundance and distribution of outbreaks.

BIOTIC CONDITIONS

Rodents abundance evaluation:

Breeding conditions:

Ivory Gulls did not nest in 2006 on Victoria Island, although a big colony existed there from 1950s to 1990s. An absence of ice cover on adjacent sea and associated poor feeding conditions for Ivory Gulls could be a possible reason for non-breeding. Almost all nests of other seabirds having undertaken breeding attempt on Victoria Island (Arctic Terns, Glaucous Gulls and Kittiwakes - the latter on deserted facilities of the closed polar station) were destroyed by an Arctic Fox staying on the island in summer.

Rodent dynamics:

Lemmings are absent on Victoria Island.
